The Great Blue Heron: Pt. 2

Here is the very nearly completed model of the great blue heron. The legs are sketched in and the feet have yet to be added, other than that, the rest is finished. The body will be cast separately from the feet.

  1. This is absolutely beautiful, I especially love the details of the long neck feathers. Did you carve out the feathers on the wings or did you lay on new clay pieces? Probably a mix of both :D

I just found your blog, and your name struck me as familiar... It turns out I went to GDRHS with you! I was class of '04, we hung out in generally the same group though we were never THAT close... I was never without my coat and sometimes an umbrella. I remember you were a talented artist then but certainly not as skilled as you are now!

I'm an artist myself now, I'd love to get in touch with you and exchange thoughts and ideas. Email me at purplewind@rocketmail.com if you want to :)

  2. Thank you for the comments. ^_^
When using oil-based clay I use a combination of both additive and subtractive sculpting. The feathers were added individually as rough forms and carved down to shape.

I'm pretty sure I know exactly who you are, nice to run into you online. Do you have your own blog or website?
